What Is Keto and How Does It Work?​​​​​​​


The Ketogenic Diet is a low carb, high fat method of eating.

Ketogenic diet or KETO in short, is a very popular diet today. It has been discovered in recent years.

It is based of an old diet used by a doctor from the early 19 hundreds to help children with epilepsy​​​​.

But why is it called keto? What is keto? I will explain...

When we eat food. The body digests the food, and the food becomes energy. There are two types of energy.​​​​​​​

One is GLUCOSE which comes mostly from carbohydrates, and sugar

And second is KETONES which comes mainly from high fat foods.​​​​​​​

The body can use fat, and carbohydrates for energy.

But why doesn't the body always use fat as a source of energy?​​​​​​​

This is where the LIVER comes in. It is responsible for creating ketones. It takes the fat and turns it into ketones and the brain and body use it for energy.


But there is something that PREVENTS the liver from creating ketones, and that is the level of insulin in our body.

As soon as we eat carbohydrates the insulin level rises. And prevents the liver from forming ketones.

The excess carbohydrates also become FAT, because there is basically nothing to break the fat down into energy.​​​​​​​

To get to the point where the body uses fat as an energy source, the insulin level should be low.

When insulin is low. The body can move from one to the other. Instead of processing energy from carbohydrates. It can process energy from fat.

To reach a low insulin level, we must change the energy source. Instead of eating carbohydrates we should eat fats.

But we never give to the body enough fat to make such a change, and the carbohydrates we eat become fat.

The more carbohydrates we eat, the level of insulin increases. Which blocks the body's ability from switching from carbohydrates to fat as a source of energy.

The body needs a lot of fat to switch to using fat as an energy source.

Once the body eats enough fat. The body will make the change, instead of taking energy from carbohydrates, the body will take energy from the fats.

This condition is called KETOSIS. And that's when the body uses KETONES i.e. fats, as an energy source. Hence the name KETO.

Eat FAT to burn FAT

There are indeed fats that can make you sick. But in keto diet, healthy fats are used.

It won't help if you eat 50% fat and 50% carbs. It has to be at least 75% fats for the process to work.

Like I explained eating carbohydrates raises the level of insulin in the body. And insulin blocks the process of ketosis. 

And will turn the carbohydrates into energy. And not the fat.

That is why we should almost eliminate the carbohydrates from our body to as low as only 5%.​​​​
